All set nicely for the Crestwood Church derby

SICM Sevens report

Congratulations to Tipton Family Church FC (and the colour scheme reflects that!), who lift the first trophy of the season courtesy of their hard fought win in the final of The Summer Cup. It was 0-0 at the break and the final score of 3-0 does not do credit to how close the encounter with Hilly House really was. It could have gone either way, but in the end TFC ran out winners and so well done to them. While they were battling it out, with Brandhall & Quinton FC resting this week, Crestwood Cobras took full advantage as they added three points to their already impressive league tally. And with St Matthew's Ravens being the victims, the 2-1 scoreline suggests that Cobras had to pull something extra from out of the bag.

And with the Crestwood derby being the next game on both team's radar, it looks like being extra spicy, as just behind the Cobras in the league are Crestwood Church FC. They move into third as a result of their 7-1 demolition job on AFC Fatherless Barn - who themselves have been putting in some solid performances recently. In-form Amerjit Singh grabbed a hat-trick for Crestwood, making him one of four players this week to find the net three times or more.

Top scorer was Kingsway Lions' Ed Caton who got four of his teams goals as they drew with Midland Elite FC, sharing the points in a ten goal thriller. Jeet Bhogal scored three of ME's tally and they now find themselves the league's highest goalscorers - although what they score at one end they pretty much go on to concede at the other. But that sums up their game, which is very much a fast flowing attractive style of open football. If you want to beat them then be prepared to score a few goals in the process!

The final match of the week saw Ebenezer FC beat bottom club Stour Valley Rovers 7-1, helped along by a Ben Jones hat-trick. The win puts them into eighth place and just four points behind Hilly House, who themselves are looking at a top two finish. It shows just how close the league is, even though we are at the halfway stage in terms of games played.

And finally, as most of you already know, SICM Sevens is run as a charity league, raising funds for SICM's work in Africa. After we pay for trophies, pitch hire, referees and room hire for the presentation everything then goes into the work we do. And so it is with great pleasure that we can confirm last season we raised a total of £3,299.91. SICM is a registered charity and we have independent accountants who do the books each year so there is that inbuilt accountability in the system. But many thanks to everyone who plays, manages and generally gets involved. You're all part of it!
