James Colton vehicle fund

Those who are aware of James and his work in Tanzania will know that it is more than just a passing phase in his life, but rather it is his focus and raison d'etre. James has a passion for the people of Tanzania that is fuelled by his love for God and the call upon his life. As a consequence, he is already establishing roots in the form of a home, although looking at the cost of house prices here in the UK, we won't talk about that as it might make some us jealous!

But what James really needs at the present time is a vehicle, and due to the terrain and strain that it will be put through, it needs to be a suitable one. Although in the UK, a 4x4 may be a fashion accessory, in rural Tanzania it is a necessity. Therefore we have launched a fund to enable a vehicle to be purchased.

There are a few words from James below concerning the vehicle, details of how to give, and also how the fund is going at the present time. We're going for a good vehicle, which although more expensive initially, will be more cost effective in the long-term. We've also taken into account spares and repairs - it's not just about buying the item but maintaining it.

This was the e-mail that we received from James confirming the costs involved:

'As I mentioned, we are looking at Toyota Land Cruisers as there are many places to go for repairs and parts. From our looking around and costing we have found that the vehicles that are not too old and in good condition are between 35million Tanzanian Shillings and 40 million Tanzanian Shillings. (That is £14,000 pounds sterling and £16,000 pounds sterling). So we will be happy to work with whatever you then are able to send us. I tell you it will be of GREAT BENEFIT to have our own vehicle, not only for personal use and ministry, but also being able to take a team on crusades and missions. Some evenings after church there are few buses with many trying to use them, and so we are late getting home, and often we have to incur the extra expense of getting a taxi.'

How to support the fund

If you would like to make a donation towards James' vehicle fund, then send a cheque to SICM at PO Box 1216, Dudley. DY3 1GW. Make the cheque to 'SICM' but indicate elsewhere in the letter that it is for James' fund so it can be allocated accordingly. Remember to include your own name and address so that we can acknowledge your gift, and also if you are a UK taxpayer, so that we can increase the gift via the tax back system that the government operates at no cost or effort to the donor.

Updates on the fund

Although we have launched the fund today on July 18 2007 , there has already been some behind-the-scenes activity, to the extent that we kick off with £10,100 in the kitty. We will update this page as the finance comes in, and as soon as the boxes are coloured blue below, we can transfer the money and James can get the vehicle!
