Presenting a positive image of Christianity through football

July 17 2007

Can the game of football ever be compatible with the Christian faith? Well, many believers would give an immediate and resounding 'no' to that. After all, the game of soccer (which is what the Americans call it) is hardly a suitable activity for Christians to get involved in. Or is it? Well, we think it is, and last night we kicked off our fourth season of SICM Sevens. We have found that the beautiful game has been an excellent medium through which to portray the message that Christians too can enjoy sport, be competitive, but at the same time play in a manner that reflects our faith.

Invite the 20-30 year old male age group to church and you won't generally get much joy. But ask them to put a football kit on and kick a ball around and you will get a queue of takers. And that's what the SICM Sevens league is all about - presenting a positive image of Christianity to a generation that has grown up outside of church. And the great thing about SICM Sevens is that although 90% of registered players are not church-attenders, they respond wonderfully to the fact that it is a Christian-based league. There is a designated web site for the league and you can check it out at SICM Sevens.
