The role of the pastor

A growing church will have:

a) A strong leader. Must lead. Have strong character and be tough when necessary.

b) A leader with vision. Must know where he is going, and have the ability to inspire others to follow.

c) A leader with strategy. Not only has a vision for growth but also the strategy to achieve it. Must be able to communicate that strategy to others.

Must move in both:

a) Authority. But not arrogance. There is a difference between authoritarianism and authority. Be the leader and recognise the call on his life to lead.

b) Humility. But not false humility. Recognise that although God will ultimately do the work, he still has an important role to play. Be a servant.

Enabler v Equipper

a) Enabler. Takes a back seat role and encourages everyone to 'have a go' without being specific, often leading to the situation of 'square pegs in round holes' ie the wrong people in the wrong positions. Not good for church growth.

b) Equipper. Takes the lead and motivates and equips the members to play their correct part in the fulfilment of the vision. Good for church growth.
