David and Elspeth Masson
January 2001
In
their own words……
‘The journey proved not too bad given the utter chaos at Gatwick.
The real problem was not the closing of the airport, which delayed
our departure from Inverness, but the fact that due to flooding
of the motorway to Gatwick, the whole road system was grid locked
as a result of which employees and crews could not reach the airport.
It was a wonderful flight in the circumstances and Peace Donkor
from Word Alive was there to meet us when we landed. The first night
was spent at the Nurses’ Hostel and then we journeyed on to Takoradi
by state bus.

To
our surprise, delight and slight embarrassment Word Alive have installed
us in a house at the west end of town, next to the Ambassador to the
Ivory Coast, so there are three ambassadors all living together. It
is far better accommodation than we expected but we shall certainly
enjoy it and be blessed by it. It is safe and well lit and just a
short walk to the Centre. Elspeth is getting the food situation well
in hand and we are beginning to feel healthier already. Peace has
arranged a meeting of all concerned which has been drawn up on excellent
business lines, so that we know who our line managers are for each
part of the work. We are most impressed with the organisation.
We praise the Lord for a safe journey in difficult circumstances,
safe arrival of all the luggage and no reaction to any of the injections
or malaria and other pills. I also praise the Lord that Elspeth is
totally relaxed about the town and the living conditions. We have
discovered a clinic with a doctor in charge. This increases the comfort
zone.
Elspeth has completed her first full day at the school and has had
one session at the Bible School, teaching English language and essay
writing. There are 5 first year students. I have 8 periods a week,
4 on discipleship / evangelism and 4 on Old Testament studies. The
students are quite limited in their English language and Bible knowledge
but I think that we have settled on an acceptable level of teaching.
They seemed happy and able to follow everything. We were also introduced
to the Church on Sunday and are gradually getting to be known about
town.
We have been most careful and have no adverse health problems to report.
Today has been the most challenging in that both the electricity supply
and the water supply were cut off for most of the day. The electricity
came on again after a few hours. At the time of writing the water
is still off. It proves the fact that it is the early chap who gets
the shower. By the time Elspeth went for her morning shower the water
was off. There is always the sea. Bananas and oranges seem to be the
mainstay of the day. It is going to be a very healthy diet.
Otherwise we have achieved all our objectives for the first three
weeks and are now established in our respective jobs and seeking new
objectives’.
