In
their own words……
‘Greetings from Soroti, I wish it were possible for you to hear
all the sounds of Soroti as you read this newsletter – the children
in the Sunday school are singing and playing their drums, there
is a Church service in a local dialect, the sound of cattle, goats,
bicycle bells and a radio playing Jim Reeves !
I left the wet and windy shores of England and arrived here where
the temperature is about 25 degrees, and the dry season is beginning.

In
true African style, nothing has gone according to plan so far, which
will come as no surprise to those who have worked in African countries.
The story so far….. Soroti – the district of Soroti is in Northern
half of Uganda, and the town of Soroti is the main town and my base.
It is about 5 hours drive from Kampala. Soroti is a busy town, with
a hotchpotch of organisations based here, including Y.W.A.M. and a
Norwegian missionary society. The town is completely flat apart from
an enormous rock, on top of which is the town’s water tank.
Accommodation – I am renting a two bed-roomed bungalow in the grounds
of the Church of Uganda “cathedral”. There is a flushing WC, cold
running water and an occasional electric supply. I have very basic
essentials, and will be stocking up bit by bit. My calendar of Yorkshire
has pride of place. I also have a house maid, who is “mzungi-fied”
i.e. knows how to cook food for white people !
My programme – I am working for S.I.C.M., but will be working alongside
a local Pastor, Levi Elonga, who is a partner of S.I.C.M., and also
working with the Church of Uganda. Most of my work will involve ministering
in the villages, particularly to the women, and helping with health
care projects. My second bible is an excellent book called “Where
There is No Doctor”, which will go everywhere with me. I have also
been asked by the occupational therapy school in Kampala if I would
consider being a field work co-ordinator for students at the hospital
here. I visited a well organised disability project which is run by
disabled people and has a small group of community based rehabilitation
workers (all disabled) who assess, make and provide aids and equipment
(wheelchairs included) and carry out rehabilitation programmes in
the people’s homes. Very commendable ! Polio and cerebral palsy seem
to be the main causes of disability – malaria is prevalent and causes
various related illnesses.
One answer to prayer – the Post Office here has a computer with internet
facilities, so you are able to e-mail me now : jewilby2000@yahoo.co.uk
However did David Livingstone cope without a mobile phone and e-mail.’
