Des Taylor carp DVD 'In pursuit of a 40'

In this DVD the title says it all, as the camera follows Des Taylor's attempts to catch a 40lb carp in three days from the Avenue fishery in Shropshire. As a passionate angler myself, it's hardly a hardship watching a fishing DVD, but from the moment it started I liked the approach. It isn't a heavy, technical-style type presentation with detailed close-up rig and bait clips that can be hard going sometimes. Not that you won't learn anything from watching it, because you will; but it's the light, anecdotal and spontaneous feel of the filming that appealed to me. When Des gets excited about the fish he catches he really means it, there is no putting it on for the camera.

This is Des at his best, having the freedom to express himself in front of the lens; you see him as he is. I liked the late night bivvy clips in particular where he shares his thoughts in a one-man-and-his-camera style. Definitely inspiring and you find yourself wondering, just like Des, is that fish on the end of the line the target weight? Does Mr Taylor accomplish what he set out to do? Well for that, you'll have to buy the DVD!

There are guest slots from Steve Briggs, Rob Hayles, Matt Hayes, Richard Lee, Chris Tarrant and Andy Walker. And with friends like Chris Tarrant, who need enemies! Watch and you will see what I mean! But the insertions from these anglers certainly add to the content and in particular to the build-up as Des targets his monster carp.

The only improvement suggestion I could make (and that can be rectified on the next cover insert) is that there is no time indicated anywhere. But that doesn't take away from the DVD in any way shape or form - I'm just trying to be objective! It was quite late when I sat down to watch it and it would have been helpful knowing how long it lasted. As it is, I found out that it's a 1hour and 20 minutes production. And that just goes to show how good it is really because it honestly seemed like far less than that to me. Time flies when you're having fun and all that.

Definitely the thumbs up from me. Would make a great Christmas/birthday etc present for any angler, but just to be on the safe side don't take chances and buy a copy yourself! You can buy the DVD direct (£14.99*) from Des Taylor via the SBS website

* November 24 - the DVD is now £9.99
