Cardinal Basil Hume - The Mystery of the Cross (bc1-573)

Why do tragedies occur? Why do the innocent have to suffer? Why do so many of us experience pain and desolation during our lives? In these profound reflections drawn from his homilies and speeches over the past twenty years, Cardinal Basil Hume shares his own questionings, his own searching, his own anguish. He joins with us as a fellow pilgrim walking through life, and meditates on the deep mysteries and uncertainties of our journey.

A.C. Bouquet - Everyday Life in New Testament Times (bc1-579)

The Roman Empire controlled Palestine during New Testament times. What was the effect of the laws, their customs and their army on the people of Palestine? The author has brought together, and related with vigour all the known facts about the houses, clothes, food, finance, commerce, law courts, education and entertainments of the Jews and Gentiles to whom the Gospel was first preached. He also shows how deeply the influence of Rome was impressed on Palestine.

Bernhard W. Anderson - The Living World of the Old Testament (bc1-584)

This second edition has been extensively revised and brought up to date. In particular, the section on the early history of Israel incorporates information which has become available since the publication of the first edition. Discussions between experts of different faiths have given rise to numerous textual alterations which have been taken into account. The index has been enlarged and divided into separate author and subject entries and the bibliography expanded. New illustrations and improved maps support the text. The work takes the form of a companion to the Bible: it does not retell the story, but provides a well-informed introduction and work of reference. The literary and theological development of the Old Testament is described within a framework of the development of Israel as a community.

W. E. Sangster - Westminster Sermons (bc1-226)

Volume 2 - At Fast and Festival

The Preface to this book offers the last written words of William Sangster, who served his Lord wonderfully as a preacher, and who set down some of his sermons in writing when the power to speak them had departed from him. This book will give some hint of the exact scholarship, the strong delight in Christian fellowship, and the constant wonder at the glorious gospel which it was his privilege to offer, which made a Sangster service a glorious offering to God and a triumphant encouragement to men.

A Time to Speak - Perspectives of Black Christians in Britain (bc1-232)

Edited by Paul Grant and Raj Patel.

'Black Christianity' in Britain has had many exponents and apologists. Many have made their reputations and careers from 'interpreting' Black faith to indifferent intellectuals and earnest clerics. Here, Black Christians themselves map out a Black Theology for Britain. There are nine 'second generation' Afro-Caribbean and Asian contributors, and two international perspectives by bishops from Asia and Africa, now resident in Britain. This collection will be of use to Black and White Christians, theologians and 'grassroots' people, church members and church leaders - but mostly to those who wish to see the Good News released from captivity.

Reasonable condition.

Some sections have been underlined in pencils. Also there are a few notes written in the margin.

T.V. Moore - The Last Days of Jesus (bc1-322)

The writers of the four Gospels focus special attention on the events surrounding the death of Jesus. The final seven days of his life are recorded in considerable detail, because his crucifixion stands at the heart of the Christian faith. But we sometimes fail to see that the Gospels also devote considerable space to the forty days which followed the resurrection. T.V. Moore reminds us of the importance and provides a sure guide to the significance of our Lord's ministry to his disciples during those weeks. He writes that this period of the Gospels 'furnishes to a remarkable degree an epitome of Christian doctrine and practice'. These twenty chapters take us from the hours before the resurrection to the parting message of Christ at his Ascension. In doing so, Moore's book provides instruction and practical application married with unusual skill to a spirit of profound devotion.
