John Stott - Understanding the Bible (bc1-627)

'The Bible is the prism by which the light of Jesus Christ is broken into its many and beautiful colours. The Bible is the portrait of Jesus Christ'. This book aims to help us see the portrait more clearly. John Stott examines the cultural, social, geographical and historical background of the Bible, he outlines the story and explains the message. The object is that we might be able to understand the Bible better, act on its teachings more completely, and thus grow into the people God plans us to be.

Visions of Glory (bc1-574)

Compiled by William Sykes

The Reverend William Sykes is Chaplain and Fellow of University College, Oxford. Twenty years ago he lost his faith, so he set out on a most unusual journey to try and find it again. He explored a great range of literature, poetry, art, science, philosophy and music as well as taking a fresh look at the Bible and theology. Soon he found his faith again, renewed and enlarged. But he went on exploring the areas where he found it, and Visions of Glory is the third anthology of some of the material which he has gathered over the years.

W.W.S. March - Ground of the Heart. A Commentary on the General Thanksgiving (bc1-592)

When the prodigal son returned home, he found his father coming out to meet him. He was very penitent: but he was also deeply thankful. This combination of sorrow with thankfulness is a symbol of Christian experience. On the one hand there is regret, pain, bereavement, failure, frustration, anxiety: on the other there is thankfulness at 'returning home'. The General Thanksgiving challenges us to come to terms with this interior tension in our lives. It is therefore not suitable for use at a time of self-training such as Lent.

Chapters 2, 3, and 4 investigate, respectively, The Day Past, The Day Present, and The Day Future. They discuss, first, the various genres of historical narration: legend, saga, annals etc; second, various kinds of discourse in which the meaning of 'today' is spoken about; and third, the prophetic and apocalyptic genres, in which the future is being defined from the present point of view.

Denis Lane - Preach the Word (bc1-383)

Too little of contemporary preaching is really an exposition of what the Word of God actually says. The object of this book is not only to call preachers back to the preaching of the Word, but also to give definite instruction in sermon preparation and presentation.

David Porter - Back to Basics (bc1-245)

George Bush came to regret the now immortal phrase 'Read my lips', with its promise of no new taxes. Despite the collapse of the 'Back to Basics' campaign, many wish that the slogan could have meant more than the aimless charade that it became. John Major did touch a deep chord in the nation. In this book, the author identifies why the campaign came unstuck so quickly, pointing out that it was never plausible to separate public and private mortality. But he also offers a positive contribution, set in the context of biblical and contemporary Christian analysis, demonstrating how Christians, committed to social change, can provide content and meaning to the 'Back to Basics' ideal.
